Testing the P1 Sim Mistral: the winning pedalset?

P1 SIM is an excellent family adventure. Two brothers passionate about motor racing wanted to pass on their know-how and racing experience. After several steering wheels, the P1 SIM brand presents a brand-new P1 MISTRAL pedalset. Let’s take a look at its strengths and weaknesses after two months of daily use.

A very nice first proposal from the people of Toulouse from P1 Sim. This pedalboard still has some progress to convince us 100%, whether in terms of software or hardware, but I am convinced that the brand will continue to work hard to fight at the level of competitors in the same price range.

Positive side
  • Unique design and quality of materials.
  • Made in France.
  • Brake feel very relevant for a simracer looking for realism and versatility.
  • Vibration motors are integrated into the pedals.
  • Full integration of settings into the SimHub software.
Negative side
  • The software part does not allow quick handling of the curves of each pedal or saving of calibrations and/or dead zones.
  • Changing the brake rubbers should be simplified.
  • The price places it in direct competition with models with hydraulic movement or a hydraulic pressure sensor.

Design and ergonomics

The MISTRAL pedal set has a great design without forgetting its many qualities. P1 SIM has taken care of every detail in the design of this product.

The perfect integration of the haptic motors is immediately noticeable and reinforces confidence in the product. An ideal design, simple and practical at the same time. We are not forgetting the striking carbon heel rest. All this is accompanied by a multitude of color choices.

You’d have to be highly picky not to find what you’re looking for. A purchase is first and foremost a “coup de coeur”, and we, at the editorial office, have been won over by this French product.

Other possibilities will be available later. P1 SIM is continuing its customer survey to determine the second color range. The ADAC 2023 was an opportunity for the brand to sound out the public and get a clearer idea of the various requests.

Installing the P1 Sim Mistral on the chassis

The pedalset, in its basic configuration, is supplied without the plate. If your chassis allows it, you’ll easily be able to attach the whole thing without any problem. We can only recommend the P1 – BASE PLATE, priced at €69.00 incl. VAT, which will allow you to integrate the second option, the carbon heel-rests. Your beautiful pedalset will fit perfectly into your chassis.

Ease of use and adjustment

The brake pedal is the central hub, perfectly integrating the 16-bit card. When the two pedals are connected, the product is virtually plug-and-play. A thumbwheel on the front of each pedal determines longitudinal progression.

Let’s not forget the many other possible settings we’ll cover in detail in our next major test.

If, after the first test, you’re not happy with the hardness of the pedalset, don’t panic. As with any self-respecting pedalset, it’s perfectly possible to interchange the elastomer brake pads.

On to the software!

P1 SIM had the excellent idea of developing a software package integrated into the SIM HUB software. This software needs no introduction, as its use in the world of simulation has become indispensable. According to initial feedback, it’s possible to determine the right curves and braking feel very quickly. It’s true to say that our first hands-on experience at the ADAC 2023 was excellent. Given P1 SIM’s experience in motor racing, it seems evident that this pedalset will bring us closer to the real thing.

The brake: 2 simultaneous recordings

On the technical side, one detail caught our eye. The MISTRAL pedalset has a unique feature. In addition to the Load Cell sensor, the brake pedal uses a second magnetic HALL sensor to measure pedal displacement. These two pieces of information ensure the perfect curve and feel during braking. It is a unique technology that only P1 SIM has had the foresight to explore.

Haptic motors

More and more brands are now offering haptic feedback for their pedalsets. The possibilities are enormous, whether you want to feel ABS operation or provide vehicle vibrations.

Fanatec was the first brand to exploit this field. The P1 SIM brings an evolution in technology and a perfect integration of the motors. Simagic breaks the game with its shakers; let’s keep that in mind.

Evolving the P1 Mistral

P1 Sim Mistral has another positive aspect: its evolution. In addition to the various colors available later, a hydraulic module will see the light of day in 2024. It will bring that little extra that many of you are looking for in braking sensations. An additional option to satisfy a demanding public.

What we thought of the P1 Sim Mistral pedalset

On the track, the P1 Sim does precisely what you’d expect. It’s versatile and pleasant, and its brakes are stable and high-performance. However, I regret that the software management is still too limited, and the saved profiles do not consider calibrations or dead zones. And for the die-hard riders, I’m one of, I hope the brand will make it easier to change brake rubber in the future. Something is in Flo’s mind: she does not find the sensations felt during ADAC 2023.
