Simply put, the Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter is reputed to be the best mid-range gearbox compatible with PS3, PS4, X Box One and PC.
If you own a 3-pedal pedalboard like those supplied with the T300RS GT Edition, the T500RS or even competitor Logitech ‘s G29 or G923, you’re bound to be looking for the best alternative to complete your setup.
That’s why we’re here today. Let’s take a look at what the TH8A has to offer. In terms of feel, precision and quality.
So let’s get on with the first stage of our Thrustmaster TH8A review!

Design and ergonomics
The surprises start as soon as you open the box. The box is fitted by default with the H grid. Included in the package is the cover that replaces the grid to switch to sequential mode. Two replacement screws have also been added, along with a 2.5mm Allen wrench that will come in handy when adjusting or changing the grille.
Another interesting surprise is that the TH8A is supplied with a DIN-USB cable and a DIN-DIN cable, both fitted with screw-on ferrules to prevent accidental disconnection. A very good point for Thrustmaster.
I’m also surprised by its weight. Once the ball is mounted, it weighs just over 2Kg, and you really get the feeling of having a quality, solid object in your hands. The H-grid is made of metal, as are the bar and pommel ball, and most of the housing.
The clamp for mounting it on a table is thick, removable and directional… In short, so far, I haven’t regretted my investment.
Underneath the grille, a fabric prevents dust and crumbs from falling into the mechanism. In the middle of the pommel bar, where the bar rubs against the grille, Thrustmaster has inserted a plastic ring that rotates freely and limits friction between the parts. (It remains to be seen how long this part will last)
From a purely design point of view, this is a beautiful object. It clearly surpasses the quality of the Logitech Driving Force Shifter. At the same time, we’re not in the same range either. The TH8A is clearly mid-range, while the Driving Force Shifter is entry-level.
H or sequential gearbox, the TH8A adapts!
If the Thrustmaster TH8A has made a name for itself in the cockpits of Simracers the world over, it’s undoubtedly due in part to one of its highly practical features.
It can switch from H-box mode to sequential mode in just a few minutes!
To switch from one mode to the other is pretty straightforward: unscrew the ball, remove the 4 small screws using the Allen key supplied, remove the H-grid, install and screw in the sequential plate, and replace the ball.
Granted, you won’t be doing this every day, let alone every time you change vehicles during a game session. But with the TH8A , the choice is yours.
Some even use it as a handbrake, but that’s only possible on PC.
Installing the Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter
If you’re planning to use your TH8A Shifter on a table, simply use the steel vice-clamp that comes as standard on the TH8A base. It enables you to mount your box on supports up to 8cm thick (!!). And its two non-slip grips give it a grip I’d describe as titanic.
Where Thrustmaster has been inspired is in the ergonomics of this shifter. Is your support not perfectly perpendicular to your seat? No problem! You can rotate the H or sequential grid 360° to find precisely the right position for you.
The same goes for the clamp, which also swivels to adapt to absolutely any situation or piece of furniture.
But if you’d rather fix your TH8A permanently, simply unscrew the clamp to reveal the 4 M6 screw threads that will literally weld your box to your cockpit.
Once the box is in place, it’s time to make the connections. You’ll need to choose between DIN-USB or DIN-DIN, depending on whether you want to connect the TH8A directly to a Thrustmaster steering wheel or to your PS4, X Box One or PC console.
TH8A settings and compatibility
Once you’ve installed your TH8A, you’ll be able to adjust it both mechanically and digitally.
Let’s start with the mechanical part. On the left-hand side of the case is a small recess which conceals a flat adjustment screw. Turn it clockwise to harden the pommel stroke, and vice versa.
Then, by connecting the USB to your PC, you’ll have the opportunity to update the TH8A‘s firmware, important to ensure it works with all steering wheels.
It’s compatible with PS3, PS4, X Box One and PC. And almost all games support it without a hitch. Let’s face it, it’s the most widely used shifter on the market, and as a game developer it would be foolish not to make sure it’s compatible.
Comfort and feel
It’s time to see what this box has to offer!
In H configuration, the box is very pleasant and easy to handle. It’s definitely more realistic than its Logitech counterpart, with firmer gears even if they’re still light compared to a real car.
The H-grid cut-out makes gear shifting intuitive. On the other hand, access to 7th gear and reverse is rather hazardous. You really have to pay attention to your movements to be sure of shifting into 7th gear correctly. You’ll tell me, it’s not often you get to drive a 7-speed H gearbox…
In sequential mode, it’s simple, efficient and comfortable. The spring in the sequential gate adds just the right amount of tension to the knob.
Definitely a job well done by Thrustmaster . The grip is really natural, and even if it’s not as good as a Fanatec Clubsport Shifter SQ V1.5, the quality of the TH8A, which is almost half the price, is commendable.
Customizing the Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter
For those who wish to remain in sequential mode, Thrustmaster offers the TH8A Sequential knob. This part replaces the knob ball for greater comfort and accessibility in sequential mode.
Note that you can also opt for any knob ball sold in car stores.
Enthusiasts have also created tons of add-ons to enhance the TH8A ‘s feel and even its design. So your H or sequential gearbox can evolve over time to keep pace with your tastes and simracer skills.
Durability
Thrustmaster has opted for non-contact gear changes. Let me explain. Inside the TH8A is a magnet that pinpoints the precise location of the shift knob. There is no contact between the magnet and the gear knob. The mechanism’s lifespan is therefore virtually unlimited.
What I did notice, however, after 3 years of use, was (slight) wear on the plastic part that ensures friction between the knob and the H-grid.
